Astrantia 'Sparkling Stars Red'
More commonly known as Hattie’s Pincushion or Masterwort, Astrantia Major Sparkling Stars Red is an attractive perennial suitable for growing in beds, borders, pots, and containers.
Reaching an eventual height and spread of up to 60cm, it has a compact growing habit with vibrant mid-green foliage forming mounds of greenery. In summer, tall flower stems appear, bearing attractive, unusual, star-shaped blooms of deep crimson red. These are surrounded by deep-red bracts and appear to twinkle in the sunlight, hence the name. The flowers are long lasting, blooming from June right through to August. They are a magnet for pollinators and make excellent cut flowers, lasting well in a vase of water.
These herbaceous perennials are low maintenance and easy to grow in any outdoor space. They prefer a spot in full sun or partial shade and thrive in moist but well-draining soil. Lightly prune after flowering to encourage fresh new foliage growth and keep the plant tidy. Astrantia Sparkling Stars Red is fully hardy and can survive almost anything the British weather throws its way. However, Astrantia plants grown in pots may need some additional winter protection to protect the roots against frost damage.
