Grape 'Frankenthaler'

This is a premium, historic dessert grapevine famous for producing large, luscious, incredibly sweet black grapes. Traditionally grown in grand Victorian glasshouses, it is a heat-demanding vine that requires optimal conditions to turn its internal starches into the complex sugars needed for a premium harvest.

To care for 'Frankenthaler', you must provide the absolute hottest, most sheltered sun-trap on your property—a baking south-facing brick wall is ideal. The soil must be exceptionally well-draining, as wet roots will ruin the harvest. You must strictly manage the summer canopy by thinning out leaves so the sun physically hits the grape clusters, and prune the woody framework hard in deep winter while the vine is dormant.
