Aztec 'Sweet Herb'

The Aztec Sweet Herb is a unique plant cultivated almost exclusively for the intense, clean sweetness found in its leaves. This potent sweetness, which is many times stronger than sugar, comes from a natural compound and is released by chewing the leaves or steeping them in hot water. It is traditionally used as a natural, calorie-free sweetener, particularly for teas and other beverages, though some people detect a faint, minty, or liquorice-like aftertaste.

This plant is typically grown as a tender, low-spreading ground cover or as a trailing "spiller" plant in pots and hanging baskets. It is highly sensitive to cold and must be protected from frost. It is not drought-tolerant and must have fertile, well-drained soil that is kept consistently moist through regular watering.
