Sweet Violet

Sweet Violet is a popular perennial herb, famously prized for the unmistakable, sweet perfume of its flowers. The primary parts used for their culinary and aromatic value are the delicate, fragrant flowers, which provide a sweet, floral flavour perfect for crystallizing, infusing into syrups, or making scented sugars. However, its edibility doesn't stop there; the young, heart-shaped leaves are also edible and can be added to salads or used as a thickener for soups.

When it comes to planting and maintenance, this is an easy-to-grow, low-spreading perennial that is very adaptable. It is, however, quite particular about its light conditions and will thrive in locations with partial or dappled shade, such as under trees or shrubs. The main requirement for it to grow well is providing it with soil that is kept moist but remains well-drained and is rich in organic matter. As an added benefit to the garden, its attractive, fragrant purple flowers are known to be very popular with early pollinators.
