Lavender angustifolia

English Lavender is a classic flowering herb cultivated primarily for the sweet, floral fragrance found in its purple flower spikes and narrow grey-green leaves. This delicate flavour, which is perfumed and slightly sweet with hints of citrus, is released when the buds are dried or infused in sugar. It is traditionally used as a sophisticated flavouring for shortbread, ice creams, and soothing teas, as well as being the gold standard for dried sachets and essential oils due to its legendary calming properties.

This plant is typically grown as a hardy, compact evergreen shrub that forms a neat, silver-green mound, making it the ideal choice for low hedging or path edging. It is extremely tough and frost-tolerant, capable of surviving harsh winters provided the drainage is good. For the best results and the highest concentration of essential oils, plant it in a location with full sun. It is highly drought-tolerant once established and thrives in poor, chalky, or gritty soil, as it will rot quickly if placed in heavy, fertile, or waterlogged ground.
