Liriope 'Okina'
Liriope Muscari ‘Okina’, commonly known as the Blue Lilyturf is an interesting variety with unusual foliage, that changes colours with seasons. It grows arching and erect branches of strap-shaped leaves that are white in spring, slowly turning speckled green in summer and maturing as deep green in autumn.
Liriope Okina is a popular groundcover plant for shade, originating from the forests of eastern Asia. In late summer, the shrubs will flush spectacular tiny purple-violet wands of lily flowers. These blooms look very dashing against the changing foliage colours of Okina. The flowers are followed by black berry-like fruit in autumn.
This dwarf shrub is easy to grow, featuring eye catching foliage that will illuminate a shady garden corner. Plant it in an average to moist soil in full sun or partial shade. As the shrub will mature, it will develop tolerance against heat and drought. Prune the leaves back hard in winter with a sharp mower blade to encourage new growth.
Basically, it is a low maintenance shrub that is set to display bizarre foliage along a pathway. This is an excellent edging plant that can also be used in small groups for accent plants.
Consider planting one of these in your rock garden, it will attract attention for sure.
