Magnolia x soulangeana
Magnolia x soulangeana is a large spreading shrub or tree with a rounded crown, popular for its spring blooms that cloak the entire shrub. Also known as the Chinese Magnolia or Saucer Magnolia, it is a popular deciduous shrub that offers an attractive and pleasing floral display. It is an excellent single garden specimen, that will stand alone or in groups in any landscape.
Its large, bright saucer shaped flowers cover the naked stems, filling the air around with a pleasant scent. White and pink tulip-like flowers will rebloom sporadically during later spring, but usually the bloom is not that effective and significant. After the flowering, its branches will bear large and obovate green glossy leaves, that will autumn in autumn.
Saucer Magnolia plants can tolerate a wide range of soils, but dislike extreme wet or dry conditions. Plant them in a moist acidic soil that is organically rich and well-drained. They will thrive in full sun to partial shade. Grow them in sheltered location protected from strong winds.
Frosts in early spring can damage the flowers. Once this large shrub will mature, it will grow into a tree of height up to 4 metres. Prune in late winters or late summer to keep a healthy framework.
Magnolia shrubs are very elegant specimen flowering shrubs, or small trees that can be planted in a row.
