Mahonia 'Sweet Winter'

Mahonia 'Sweet Winter' is an invaluable architectural evergreen shrub, celebrated for bringing both scent and colour to the garden when little else is in bloom. Its main display consists of long, elegant sprays of fragrant, bright yellow flowers that are a vital nectar source for any active pollinators. These are held above dramatic, spiny, holly-like leaves, making it a true showpiece for structural interest.

For the best results, it requires a position in partial to full shade with moist but well-drained, humus-rich soil. Pruning is not essential, but if the plant becomes leggy or requires shaping, this should be carried out immediately after it has finished flowering. Unlike many shrubs that dislike a hard prune, this Mahonia is very forgiving and can be cut back significantly to encourage a fresh flush of its dramatic foliage.
