Saskatoon 'Prince William'

Saskatoon 'Prince William'

Saskatoon Prince William is a compact dwarf cultivar that grows into a medium-sized deciduous garden shrub. As well as its delicious berries, this fruit plant is valued for the colour interest it provides throughout the growing season.

In spring, the plant is covered in masses of small, white, star-shaped flowers. These begin to fade in late May, when the berries begin to appear, darkening in colour over time until they resemble blueberries. The berries ripen in early summer and are ready to harvest from early July. In autumn, the foliage transforms from mid-green to adopt dramatic shades of orange and red.

Also known as serviceberries or juneberries, saskatoon berries are bursting with antioxidants. The sweet flavour is similar to the taste of blueberries or cherries, with a hint of almond. Saskatoon berries are popular for making jams, smoothies, and dessert fillings. Be warned that birds also find these berries irresistible, so you may need to protect your crop.

Saskatoon berry shrubs are native to Canada and are relatively easy plants to grow. They produce most fruit in full sun but offer a decent harvest in partial shade. Serviceberries aren’t too fussy when it comes to soil and grow happily in most types, providing it is kept moist but well-drained. This is a hardy shrub that can cope with very cold temperatures and is resistant to most pests and diseases.

Please Note: When purchasing plants, please consider that each live item is unique and may therefore differ from the images shown, which are for illustration purposes only. The plant will be supplied in a growers pot. Depending on season, some plants may be pruned back to encourage growth and deciduous plants may arrive without leaves.
