Southernwood

Southernwood is an old-fashioned shrub cultivated primarily for the pungent, lemony-camphor fragrance found in its feathery, grey-green foliage. This distinct aroma, which is clean and bracing, is released instantly when the leaves are brushed against. It is traditionally used more for its aromatic properties - in moth-repellent sachets and potpourri - than for eating, though it was historically used in herbal teas and cakes.

This plant is typically grown as a hardy semi-evergreen shrub that can become woody and untidy if left unpruned. It is robust and cold-tolerant, often retaining some leaves in mild climates. For the best results and to keep the growth compact, plant it in a location with full sun. It is drought-tolerant and thrives in poor, light, well-drained soil, struggling significantly in heavy clay or wet conditions.
